No, you didn’t wake up this morning and think, “A Cabernet Sauvignon/Gaglioppo blend from Calabria – that’s what I want to drink tonight!” Taste this, though, and you just might find the thought crossing your mind in the future. Down in the scorching hot toe of Italy’s boot, the Gaglioppo grape evolved to deliver the intense fruit flavors of a hot climate balanced by remarkably amounts of freshening acids. Add in a dollop for super-ripe, blackcurrant-scented, Cabernet and do the whole wine in steel and you get a richly fruited, lightly tangy, satisfyingly grippy red that fills up your mouth with flavor. Really fun wine.
For You If: You’re about to eat something laced with Calabrian pepper; you want a red wine to pair with hearty seafood dishes; you like your reds a bit grippy solo and then more mellow with food.
Not For You If: You like your blackberry/black raspberry fruit super-ripe – this has some tang; you want full-bodied/lush; you’re after smooth and/or silky texture.
