Organic/Bio Decanter called Ferme Saint-Martin a “hidden gem,” and that applies to Beaumes des Venise reds in general. In the hills above the more famous Muscat vines, the soils and climate read like a cross between Vacqueyras and Gigondas as do the wines. Jullien family converted from fruit trees to grapes after the catastrophic frost of 1955, moved to organic farming in 1980, and farms and makes wine the old-fashioned way, with loads of fruit and ripeness married to a crunchy, grippy, structure and just 13.5% alcohol. Dark fruit, savory complexity and very Gigondas-like minerality make this a compelling Rhone red for all kinds of robust foods.
For You If: You love the fruit and garrigue character of great Rhone reds at less heady, more drinkable, alcohol levels; you want a robust red with real grip that doesn’t wear you out.
Not For You If: You’re looking for something smooth or light – while the tannins here are polished and the balance perfect, this drinks like a bold, robust, wine with appealingly drying minerality and grip.
