Organic/Bio Maybe the best value in sophisticated, delicious, and open for business Napa Cab in the shop right now. The Vandendriessche family purchased this lovely bowl-shaped vineyard and 19th century winery off Stags Leap in 1977, had a 6,000 square foot cave bored into the side of a volcanic hill, and have made really good, traditional, Napa wine ever since. When the 2020 fires raged, this wine was already in the cave safe from smoke and bubbling along. It’s 80% Cab Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc for lift and 4% Petit Verdot for a lovely, rich, black fruited base note.
What does it taste like? Close your eyes and imagine the essence of Napa Cabernet with oodles of ripe black fruit, a bit of something brambly, a bouquet of savory wild herb, a nice dusting of sweet spice and a bit of cocoa powder that builds through a long, broad, finish. Tastes great, in other words, and feels great, too, with really focus and energy and just enough tannic grip to handle a steak or pork chops. A wine that will delight serious Bordeaux and Napa Cab fans and also just tastes good enough for utterly unserious drinkers, too. Bravo!
For You If: You’re in the mood for the pedigree, flavor, style and long finish of a $100+ Napa Cab for substantially less than that; you’re about to dig into a meal of something rich and meaty and charred a bit from time on the grill or in the roasting pan – this is going to be a perfect match.
Not For You If: You’re looking for loads of thickness or flesh – this is plenty substantial at 14.4% alcohol and has good stuffing, but it drinks more medium-to-full bodied than thick or dense; you’re after Bordeaux – this has a lot of Pauillac character, but the fruit is decisively Napa in the best possible way.
