The Gallo family resurrected this old Monte Rosso estate, first built in 1886 and then closed during Prohibition. The wines today take advantage of Monte Rosso’s elevation to escape the morning fog that can make Sonoma Cabernet a little green and nighttime chill to balance rich fruit with delightful freshness.
There are three different 93 point raves from the critics for the very delicious and elegant 2021 edition, but Wine Advocate captures it best: "The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Sentinel comes mainly from the Monte Rosso Vineyard. It was blended with 3% Petit Verdot and was matured for 19 months in 48% new French oak. It opens very slowly from graphite and iron to wafts of blueberry, blackcurrant, aniseed and sagebrush. The full-bodied palate features understated, mineral-driven fruit at this early stage. It’s structured by fine, clay-textured tannins and bright acidity and has a long, latent finish. It will be long lived in the cellar."
For You If: You love what sure tastes like $75 Napa-style Cabernet Sauvignon at half the price – or less; you’ve got a ribeye in the fridge and are looking for the perfect wine pairing.
Not For You If: You’re looking for the strong vanilla/dill American Oak flavors of something like Silver Oak – this is all French oak and shows just a touch of sweet/savory spice to match the rich fruit and graphite minerality.
