The Gallo family resurrected this old Monte Rosso estate, first built in 1886 and then closed during Prohibition. The wines today take advantage of Monte Rosso’s elevation to escape the morning fog that can make Sonoma Cabernet a little green and nighttime chill to balance rich fruit with delightful freshness.
If you enjoyed the 2021 edition, you’re going to love the slightly richer 2022. As Wine Enthusiast says in the 91 point review: "Intense aromas of currant, cedar and cinnamon dominate the nose of this Cabernet. The palate brings flavors of salted black plum, clove and purple flowers before a long and plush, tannic finish with notes of baking spices and flowers." Delicious and highly drinkable with and without food.
For You If: You love what sure tastes like $75 Napa-style Cabernet Sauvignon at half the price – or less; you’ve got a ribeye in the fridge and are looking for the perfect wine pairing.
Not For You If: You’re looking for the strong vanilla/dill American Oak flavors of something like Silver Oak – this is all French oak and shows just a touch of sweet/savory spice to match the rich fruit and graphite minerality.
