Organic/Bio A big wine at a very big (or small depending on how you look at it) savings price! Like the Montfaucon winery, these vines grow just across the Rhone River from Chateauneuf du Pape. The surface of the vineyards look the same – lots of gravel and the rounded glacial stones called galet. But under the surface there’s more sand here vs the clay more common in Chateauneuf du Pape, giving Lirac all the ripeness of CdP but a silkier, more flowing, texture.
Winemaker Rodolphe de Pins captures that silkiness perfectly in this blend of 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah and 10% Cinsault done in concrete and large, old, barrels. Aromas of strawberries and peonies give a sense of freshness to the black cherry and plum fruit with grace notes of cinnamon and cracked black pepper adding complexity and spice. There’s more than enough grip here to support a long life in cellar, but everything is so balanced and fresh that you’ll delight in drinking it tonight. A winner!
For You If: You’re in the mood for something big on flavor and not so big on structure – this is silky soft and fluid-feeling on your palate.
Not For You If: You’re shopping for a wine that bites back with firm tannins or assertive acidity – this is more mellow than that.
