Trvia: “Hermit Crab” refers both to the marine fossils that add texture to d’Arenberg’s McLaren Vale soils and to “Hermit-age,” the French wine region where Marsanne originated and shines. This has been one of Australia’s most popular white blend exports for years, and one taste of the 2022 shows why. Viognier gives peach and apricot fruit and a hint of honeysuckle while Marsanne adds concentration and a bit of chalky mineral on the finish. Fun to drink solo and a great match with all kinds of Asian dishes, spicy or not.
For You If: You’re looking for a bottle to pop open with everything from Pho to Drunken Noodles to Szechuan chicken to tandoori lamb; you’re like generous fruit tempered by mouthwatering mineral notes; you want the freshness of Sauvignon Blanc without citrus or tropical notes.
Not For You If: Smelling and tasting a lot of fruit makes you think a wine is sweet – this has fruit but is all the way dry; you’re after lots of spice and oak flavors; you want something rich and creamy.
