Lower ABV Daniel Callan’s mission is to highlight the terroir of the Central Coast through the lens of old-vine field blends, like this wild combination of Valdiguié, Cinsault, Négrette, Zinfandel and Cabernet Pfeffer from the Shell Creek, Glenrose, Siletto and Homestead Hill Vineyards and clocks in at 12.6%, all from vines grown from cuttings taken from pre-Prohibition vineyards. Something like what you’d have found in a wine called “California Burgundy” in the late 1800s/early 20th century all at a juicy 12.6% alcohol.
Wine Advocate describes it nicely: "The nose is driven by dusty, dark-fruited aromas of dehydrated mulberries, turned earth, autumn leaves, dried flowers and petrichor. The palate is lifted and refreshing, lined with mouthwatering acidity and a mellow but persistently pleasing saturation. The finish shows impressive staying power considering the lightweight nature of the wine, concluding with silty, perfectly precise tannins. I am eager to follow this wine through bottling and recommend this producer to readers seeking a unique viewpoint on California wine."
For You If: You're in the mood for a delicious taste of California history; you like wines like Beaujolais that have a lot of fruit but are definitely not "fruity."
Not For You If: You're looking for modern California heft, density and power - this is more about freshness and vivacity.
