The Corliss family owns two premier Washington State wineries. Corliss is located in the Red Mountain AVA and focuses on Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux varietals. Tranche is in the Blue Mountains and does mainly Rhone blends. The owners are VERY particular and selective of which barrels go into their flagship wines, especially at Corliss where the focus is on making very long-lived Cab blends. Barrels of Cabernet Sauvignon that are too full of fruit, soft and supple for the big wines are blended after 14+ months in new and a little used French oak to become Secret Squirrel Cabernet.
In the powerful 2017 vintage, this is terrific value in good, gutsy, fruit-filled, Cabernet. Big blackberry and redcurrant fruit aromas and flavors pick up extra richness from notes of dark chocolate and oaky spice (22 months in very fine French oak). There's excellent richness and texture through the middle with the deep fruit and spice flavors flowing nicely across that finely tannic finish. Already delicious and has good cellar potential over the next 5+ years.
“Deeply concentrated and calked full of finesse, the outstanding 2017 Secret Squirrel Cabernet Sauvignon offers seriously good value under 30 bucks. Cassiss, anise and garrigue notes hit the palate, alongside shades of chocolate and coffee ground undercurrents. Full-bodied, give this beautiful wine an hour of air if consuming in its vibrant youth. Drink 2021-2031” Ownen Bargree (now of Vinous) 92 points
