The Corliss family owns two premier Washington State wineries. Corliss is located in the Red Mountain AVA and focuses on Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux varietals. Tranche is in the Blue Mountains and does mainly Rhone blends. The owners are VERY particular and selective of which barrels go into their flagship wines, especially at Corliss where the focus is on making very long-lived Cab blends. Barrels of Cabernet Sauvignon that are too full of fruit, soft and supple for the big wines are blended after 14+ months in new and a little used French oak to become Secret Squirrel Cabernet.
A terrific value in good, gutsy, fruit-filled, Cabernet. As Vinous says in the 90 point review, "impresses with peppery florals and exotic spice notes, accentuating a core of black currant. It's soft yet sincere, possessing juicy, zesty acidity and crisp wild berry fruits. This leaves a pleasantly bitter tinge of balsamic spice, tapering off long and resonating with lavender and violet florals."
For You If: You’re looking for big, open, fruit-filled Cabernet with a fine grip on the finish and a bit of bottle age complexity at a great value price.
Not For You If: You’re after the super-plush texture of high-end Napa wines – this is plenty big but not at all thick/heavy.
