Lower ABV Former head winemaker at Morgan, today Samuel Louis Smith is crafting brilliant wines from some of the highest, coolest, vineyards on the Central Coast. This is from a vineyard planted by Chalone head winemaker Michael Michaud in 1995 and while it’s technically “high dessert,” the cold nights create amazing savory complexity. At just 12.7% and with 50% whole clusters, this is perfectly ripe and loaded with dark black cherry fruit with accents of garrigue – wild herb and black olive – and fresh earthy notes. The finish sails on and on in a wine that’s technically light but explosively flavored and deeply, deeply, satisfying. As Virginia Boone says in the 97 point review in JebDunnuck.com, "Earth, black tea, and gravelly rock highlight an elegantly poised, complex, floral, and mineral wine that shows both dustiness in texture and ample structure for aging." Just 73 cases made.
For You If: You love how Pinot Noir expresses place and want to taste an unique wine from a highly unique site; you’re a fan of dark and generous fruit with light texture and outstanding freshness – any Willamette Valley Pinot fan is going to “get” this beauty!
Not For You If: You’re looking for lots of volume and weight or any hint of candied fruit – this is flavorful for sure, but light, elegant, flowing, fresh.
