Greco di Tufo came to Italy’s Campania before the rise of Rome, brought by colonizing Pelasgians, an ancient people from Thessaly in Greece. For a few thousand years now, it’s been recognized as one of Italy’s great white grapes, especially when grown on the sulfur rich, volcanic, soils of central Campania. It gives a wine of deep golden color and generous pear and lemon fruit and exotic accents of salty stone, ginger, spice and wild herb. Pretty much every year over the past half decade, this is the most highly rated Greco di Tufo in Campania.
As Wine Advocate explained in the 95+ point review of the 2021, "The Greco grape is naturally rich in pigments, and when it reaches full maturity, the grape takes on a golden color with amber highlights. That is the inspiration behind the wine's name, which evokes the yellow color so adored by painter Vincent van Gogh in Arles, France.” Perfectly marries rich ripeness and seafood-friendly minerality and cut.
For You If: You enjoy a splash of something savory/herbal in your Italian white - there's still plenty of fruit here but also a wild herb note that's captivating.
Not For You If: You're after a direct, fruit-filled, white - this is more complex and savory than that.
