Organic/Bio All of Pere Mata's Cava's are handcrafted, organically grown, based entirely on traditional Cava grapes, and finished without added sugar ("Brut Nature") - all part of Mata's ambition to make Cava at Champagne levels of quality. And none are better value than his "Cupida" bottling, a single-vintage blend of Xarel-lo, Macabeu and Parellada that spends 30 months on the lees before disgorgement and then resting until Matta thinks it's ready to drink. He numbers each cuvee as it releases (because sometimes he'll release vintages out of order - just depends on the wine).
Cupida No. 28 from vintage 2021 is friendly, festive and stylish - an effect Matta's broker Tom Calder calls "Barcelona in a bottle!" Very tiny, precise, bubbles dot the light gold colored wine and lift pretty aromas of fresh apple, lime and tangy stone fruit. On the palate, it's crisp, clean, and very fresh, with Granny Smith apple and lime zest flavors accented by notes of crushed chalk and wet stone. The flavors flow on through a generous, dry, finish with something lightly nutty and lemony lingers nicely. The texture and mouthfeel are crazy compelling here, making this so much fun to drink that it's hard to stop. Better get more than one bottle...
For You If: You love classy, festive fizz at a bargain price that is sophisticated enough to impress wine-snobs and open and generous enough to enjoy with a crowd.
Not For You If: You’re after the flavors of Champagne – this has some very Champagne-like texture and class, but there’s definite Spanish Cava character here and plenty of generous stone fruit.
