Maybe it’s a sign of the soft market, but it’s been a while since we’ve seen Napa Cabernet of this quality at such an enjoyable price! It’s 90% Cabernet Sauvignon plus splashes of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec & Petit Verdot with 16 months in 40 % new French oak. As Suckling says in the 90 point review, “A super-savory nose of bay leaves, cracked pepper and sage, with layers of dark chocolate, ripe plums, blackberries and coffee. Silky on the palate, with robust, opulent red and dark fruit, juicy acidity and ripe tannins that feel well integrated. Over-delivers for a value wine. Full-bodied.”
For You If: You like Napa Cabernet flavor and style at prices you last paid in the 1990s if, like me, you're old enough to remember buying 1994 Caymus Cab for $26.99 and being shocked when the 1995 came out at $36.99.
Not For You If: You're looking for the grip and power of mountain Cab - this has more than enough tannin to play well with a steak, but it's more about the fruit and flesh than the tannic structure.
