It’s kind of exciting to taste a Sancerre that tastes just like “Sancerre” – one that isn’t showing the sometimes over-the-top ripeness of recent vintages or the musty dilution of the wet and moldy harvest 2024. This just pops with nicely assertive scents of crystalized grapefruit, tart stone fruit, wet stones and a hint of green grass jumping out of the glass. On the palate it’s dead classic in flavor and feel. The citrus, white peach and crunchy pear fruit flavors get a boost from notes of crushed limestone and rock and lift from firm, but not abrasive, acids. There’s a hint of creaminess to the mouthfeel, but mainly this is a nicely linear, crisp, lightly stony, Sancerre that’s fun to sip solo and ready to play with seafood, goat cheese, or whatever.
The Winery & This Wine
So there’s not really much of a story here. Details are murky, but it appears that Dom des Coltabards was either created or acquired by Loire Valley/Sancerre negotiant Joseph Mellot some years ago. It’s obviously not a huge part of the Mellot empire, with just 7HA of vines in Ménétréol, between the town of Sancerre and the Loire River to the northwest. Farming doesn’t appear to be anything distinctive nor is winemaking – all steel, cool, a few months on the lees for complexity. Somehow this all came together too create an exceptionally good and well-priced 2024 Sancerre.
