What happens with two Burgundy winegrowers join as a couple to create a new estate in the Languedoc’s sunny Minervois region? This: a darkly fruited, gutsy, wine with remarkably sleek and pure texture. A wine that’s ready to celebrate the flavors of anything you pull off the grill or from a roasting pan, but that’s supple and fresh enough to sip solo and even with a light chill. In short, a compellingly delicious and well made 50/50 collaboration.
Blending Carignan, Cinsault, Grenache and Syrah done all in steel, it bursts with juicy blackberry, raspberry and smoke aromas. On the palate, the feel is a bit Burgundian – flowing, sleek, fine – but the flavors are all robust Languedoc dark berry, roasted meat, wild herbs and a dash of the dusty limestone from the soils where the grapes grow.
Wine Advocate’s 90 point review of the equally delicious 2020 edition gives you a good idea of what to expect: “Scents of purple raspberries and blackberries emerge on the nose of the 2020 IGP Cotes du Brian La 50/50, a blend of Carignan, Cinsault, Grenache and Syrah. Medium-bodied and streamlined on the palate, it seems more refined, less forceful than prior vintages, with a greater sense of inner harmony.”
For You If: You love the rich, dark, flavors of red wines from the South of France or California spots like Paso Robles but don’t want something that feels heavy or thick.
Not For You If: You’re after the high-alcohol impact of something like Chateauneuf du Pape – this is hardly light (and 14.5% alcohol), but reads sleek and pure and poised compared to a mainly Grenache Rhone bruiser.
