Organic/Bio The Jaume family has been growing grapes in, first, Chateauneuf du Pape and then across the southern Rhone Valley since 1828. We know them best for their "baby Chateauneuf du Pape" Les Champauvins from just north of CDP and their pure and captivating Lirac Clos de Sixte. And for this wine, the always delicious and great value regional Cotes du Rhone they make from Grenache (70%), Syrah and Cinsault grown on sites dotted around the valley.
Their 2022 Cotes du Rhone is a beauty, picked well before climate change overripeness dulls the flavors and made all in steel to keep things fresh and vibrant. It's a rich, deep, wine with more than enough stuffing to play well with steak and burgers off the grill. And with enough pep and fruit to place with spicy dishes and pizza. And the smooth, silky, texture that invites sipping all by itself with no food at all. The team at JamesSuckling.com describe it well in their 91 point review, “A solid Côtes-du-Rhône, fruit-driven yet well-structured and serious. It has notes of red berries, wild herbs, wafers and some baking spices. Medium- to full-bodied with fine, firm tannins. A silky core of berries blends with a solid frame of tannins on the palate. Creamy, chocolatey finish.”
For You If: You’re looking for an all-purpose, crowd-pleasing, red you can pop open for pretty much any red wine occasion that comes up; you enjoy the dark fruit and hint of wild herb and black olive that makes southern Rhone reds so distinctive and enjoyable.
Not For You If: You’re after the kind of 16% alcohol wines that are becoming so common in the Rhone these days from climate change heat and drought – this is plenty big at 14% but not fat, fleshy or overpowering.
