Ever wondered what would happen if you made Amarone with Nebbiolo? We hadn't either until we were bowled over by this 100% Nebbiolo Sforzato di Valtellina. The high-altitude Nebbiolo of this mountainous region abutting the Swiss border are normally ripe, but elegant. Here, though, the very best fruit is air-dried on straw mats for 3-4 months, losing about 30% of their weight (mostly water) and intensifying and developing flavor. Then, after a slow, long, ferment, the wine spends one year in barrel and more in bottle before being released ready to drink.
As Wine Advocate said in their 93 point review of the 2015, the Dirupi Sforzato "offers a full range of aromas that spans from dried cherry to tar to smoke to sweet tobacco." The air-drying (and up to 100 year-old vines) give the wine intense concentration and superbly deep black cherry, plum and berry fruit with oodles of licorice, tobacco and tar complexity. Very deep - although not heavy - the wine finishes with firm grip and power and licorice, black fruit and tar flavors that linger on and on. Amarone fans will love this, although it's balanced enough for folks who enjoy Napa Cab or richer Super-Tuscan Bolgheri wines to be captivated as well. Very limited.
