The narrow, steep-sided, pass between Valle d'Aosta and the rest of Italy is a silly place to grow grapes. But Roman troops stationed here needed something to drink, so they terraced the nearly vertical valley walls, built pergolas, and trained grapes across them. And the local farmers who didn't move south to Turin in search of jobs in the 1950s managed to keep most of those terraces working until passionate and talented winegrowers like Federico and Deborah Santini arrived in the 2010s to join long-time Carema champion Ferrando in bringing the region back to life.
This is utterly beautiful and Burgundy-like Nebbiolo from 50 year-old vines on the old Roman terraces at 300-500 meters elevation. Like you'd expect from these cool sites, the wine is light in color and mainly red-fruited in flavor with layers of tobacco, rose petal and truffle coming up with air. The tannins are super-fine and persistent, giving a squeeze that keeps the beautiful flavors flowing. A stunner.
For You If: You are ready to savor a beautiful rarity that showcases the delicate, floral and pure side of Nebbiolo; you enjoy wines with silky flow and fine grip.
Not For You If: You're after the dark fruit and muscular structure of Barolo - this is hardly "light," but feels more open, elegant and ethereal than that.
