There’s a good argument to be made that the best place in the world to make dry Chenin Blanc is Savennieres, on the north side of the Loire river across from Coteaux du Layon (where sweet wines reign). This is a benchmark producer and a classic wine, redolent of complex aromas and flavors of orchard fruits, wild honey and lychee with a rich texture and fully dry, highly mineral, finish. Open and ready now and will get even more complex, aromatic and stony with age.
For You If: You’re looking for a full-bodied white with no oak, loads of complex flavors, and a markedly minerally finish; you’re after a great pairing with fresh water fish simply prepared – this will sing!
Not For You If: You’re looking for something really light – this is just 13.5% but feels full – or marked with oak spice.
