Organic/Bio The edges of Antiquum Farm’s “Big Field” vineyard are kind of the far edge of what Pinot Noir can do. The winemaking is simple enough – fully de-stemmed fruit, open top fermenters, a bit of a post-ferment soak for texture, and 10 months aging in around 30% new French oak. The vines were normal enough when planted, a mix of Wadensvil and Dijon 667 clone, and like the rest of the vineyard were picked in the pre-dawn dark. But exposed to the extreme biodiversity Stephen’s Grazing-Based Viticulture creates, Pinot Noir gets pretty wild here.
Stephen’s description is spot on: “This wine captures the more eccentric, ethereal voice of Antiquum Farm. Passiflora opens with a flourish of wild roses, lavender, and orange zest.. The mid-palette deepens briefly to soft cocoa and more lush tropical notes, and baking spice before lifting again with ripe raspberry, pomelo, persimmon, and passionfruit. The everlasting finish soars with a feeling of weightlessness.” As in 2023, this is the most tightly wound wine of the set and it needs air to become expressive now (or, even better, 3-5 years in cellar). I think it may be the finest Antiquum Farm Pinot made to date, but time will tell.
For You If: You’re looking to go a bit beyond the “typical” Willamette Valley Pinot Noir taste and texture profile – this is utterly distinct.
Not For You If: You’re looking for straight-ahead Pinot fruit with a bit of barrel spice and a light mouthfeel – this is richer in texture, more exotic in flavor, and absolutely compelling.
