Organic/Bio In the past, Passiflora was the Antiquum Farm wine that made Willamette Valley Pinot Noir fans scratch their heads and mutter, "Wait - what?" There’s some of that in the 2021 edition, but just a touch more restrained, serving more as an accent to a wine that is more traditionally striking and delicious. From the highest part of the vineyard, it somehow has developed both extraordinary levels of ripeness and, somehow (how?!?!) retained stupendous levels of 100% natural acidity and tannin.
And concentration and intensity. This is definitely the most “intense” of Stephen Hagen’s 2021, and it’s wound up tight today. Crushed raspberry, brandied fruitcake, mocha, blood orange, spice and more are down there in the core if you dig deep enough. But, today, the flavors are contained in a sphere of fine tannin and acidity that drive a stupendously long finish. Impressive for its linear focus and thrust today, the 2021 Passiflora is begging you to stash it away for 3-4 years to let everything harmonize and expand to fill the bottle and, ultimately, your glass. Best from 2025-2036 and possibly “best” period. Only 650 cases made.
