Lower ABV From the Picollo family's home village of Rovereto in the heart of the Gavi di Gavi DOCG, this is pretty much the essence of the region’s native white grape, Cortese. Think of this a cool, green, steely Gavi, with bold aromas and flavors of crunchy honeydew melon, Key lime, and crisp, ripe, Granny Smith apple picked right at the height of ripeness.
The mouthfeel is similar to an excellent Albarino, vivid and zesty with the feel of cold steel and bite of crushed wet slate. The flavors really race across your palate, flowing with a super silky feel and sheen. A touch of lime blossom on the nose repeats on the finish as waves of green apple, tart peach, and fresh lime flavors linger beautifully. A touch more body than the regular Gavi, but still light (just 13.0% alcohol) and equally intense in its flavor and finish. I suppose this will improve over the next few years, but I cannot imagine being able to wait. Remarkably good and pretty brilliant value.
For You If: You’re after a crisp, dry, light white that still has tons of mouthfeel and flavor; you’re looking for something a touch steely but not at all austere; you just feel like saying, “Lets have some Gavi di Gavi tonight.”
Not For You If: As with the “regular” Picollo Ernesto Gavi, this won’t tick your tock if you’re looking for rich or “heavy” whites – this is super-flavorful but light and crisp; you’re after something oaky – nothing but steel and fruit here.
