Even though Garnacha probably first came into being here, Navarra Garnacha isn't really a thing in the wine market. This region between Rioja and the Pyrenees mountains saw Garnacha plantings fall from 90% of vines in 1980 to under 30% today as farmers and co-ops rushed to capitalize on cheap land and booming export demand for Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and more. Think chunky, rustic and anonymous.
But Navarra Garnacha is making a comeback, like in this wine from St Martin de Unx near Baja Montana where a touch of sea breeze cools things down a bit. And where Rioja winemaker, David Sampedro seems to have found some fine older vines and gotten the nicely ripe fruit into bottle with all of its character intact. Aromas of ripe strawberry and red cherry pick up a hint of the wild, herby, scrub note the French call "garrigue." On the palate the fruit is mid-season ripe – not tart and not sweet – and supported by a bit of Garnacha’s natural wild herb, spice and earth flavors. Some nice acids give lift and soft tannins will handle pretty much any kind of red wine-friendly food and not get in the way of enjoying the wine solo with a chill. Kind of Swiss Army Knife red, ready for anything you throw at it and anytime you need something delicious and fun to enjoy.
For You If: You're looking for the kind of red that’s direct enough to please all kinds of wine drinkers with enough complexity and texture to keep you happy, too; you're after a chillable red for summer sipping that will flow into fall with ease.
Not For You If: You're looking for the earthier profile of a Grenache-based Cotes du Rhone - this is all Garnacha/Grenache with no Syrah or Mourvedre to darken things up.
