Hanzell is one of the few wineries that both helped drive the creation and fame of the California wine industry and that still turns out great wines today. It was founded in 1954 by Ambassador James D. Zellerbach to make wines as close to his beloved Burgundy as possible. Today they are still farming the oldest producing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vines in California and using classic Burgundian farming and winemaking approaches. And were the first to use small batch, temperature-controlled, stainless steel tanks and to isolate the bacteria needed for reliable malolactic fermentation.
That all comes together here in a vibrant, mineral-driven, interpretation of Moon Mountain, Sonoma, Chardonnay. As JamesSuckling.com says in the 95 point rave, "Precise and focused aromas of flint, lemon confit, orange oil and hazelnuts. The palate is mid-weighted with vivid acidity and a textural but delicate mouthfeel. 100% stainless steel fermentation and then six months in old French oak has maintained lovely freshness and tension that has set the wine up for aging."
For You If: You enjoy the mineral cut and bite of old-school Chablis paired with a touch of New World flesh and fruit.
Not For You If: You're looking for big, round, buttery, oaky Chard - this is all about the energy, crispness and minerality.
