Organic/Bio Way back in Dom Perignon’s times, the hills from Bouzy to Ambonnay were rated among Champagne’s best for deep red wine and both were among the last to move to sparkling wine production as their main activity. Today red wine flows here again, most impressively from this less than one acre plot of Pinot Noir planted in 1905 that Gonet-Medeville farms according to organic and biodynamic standards.
The Vinous note suggest what to expect: “The 2020 Côteaux Champenois Millésime Cuvée Athénaïs has a generously red color and brims with earthy, juicy Pinot-ness on the nose. The palate is super smooth and ripe with resolved, silky tannin. Yet, despite the alcoholic strength, the medium body and smoothness, there is nothing overripe, nothing opulent. Yes, this is ripe, but stony, chalky austerity makes it all work. Balance, freshness and full fruit make for a lovely red Pinot Noir with exquisite perfume and balance.”
For You If: You enjoy different takes on Pinot Noir and one that’s both ripe yet light sounds appealing; you’re ready to splurge to taste a bit of Champagne history!
Not For You If: You’re looking for something really lean/crisp or dense/thick – this is medium-bodied, fresh, and full of ripe fruit.
