Freisa is cousin to Barolo’s Nebbiolo grape, but it’s the more casual, cool, fun-loving member of the family! The grape name comes from Latin for “strawberry” and you’ll certainly taste a big basked of berries here along with a hint of dark florals. Like Nebbiolo, it’s a firmly tannic wine, but in a friendlier way with a lightly bitter bite that cleans up the fruit and gets you ready for the next sip.
For You If: You love big strawberry fruit in a wine that really moves on your palate and has the tannins to squeeze out the fruit and floral notes for a long, long, time; you’re having sausage or salami on your pizza – this is great with that!
Not For You If: You’re looking for “smooth” – this is frankly grippy and even has a lightly bitter bite at the end which many love and some do not.
