Lower ABV Forget the “Petit” here – this is real, classic, fresh, salty/stony, mouthwatering Chablis. From a site above Cote de Lechet riddled with limestone rocks, it’s all about crunchy green apple, lime oil, crushed up chalk and salty seaside smells. Done all in steel to preserve freshness and cut, allowed to finish malo and age on the lees for depth of texture and midpalate volume, this is dry, savory, delicious, textbook Chablis at a great price.
Frédéric Prain’s 13HA of vines are all in one big parcel on the hill overlooking the 1er cru Cote de Lechet. Almost exactly half is on Kimmeridgian limestone marls and is “Chablis.” The other half is on super rocky, Portlandian limestone and is “Petit Chablis.” Both wines are grown and made the same way. Importer Ed Addiss says some years the Village wine is better, others the Petit Chablis. Apparently, 2021 was a Petit Chablis vintage, because this is terrific and both better and less expensive than the Village wine!
For You If: First and foremost, if you like Chablis and want to drink one that tastes like “Chablis” vs Cote d’Or Bourgogne Blanc; you’re having scallops or lobster or oysters and want a wine to amp up their briny goodness.
