For the past six years, this has been a terrific Brut Champagne at a crazy good price. It comes from a co-op founded in 1959 to help grape growers in Aube, the southern part of Champagne, get a little better deal from the big name "houses" they sold to up north. In 1971 they began keeping some of their grapes and making their own Champagne, today selling mainly to the French and British markets with just a tiny bit coming to the USA and us through our friend Stephane Defot of Z Wine Gallery.
As always, it’s around 50% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Meunier and includes about 30% “reserve wine” from earlier vintages, all made in cool, fresh, stainless steel. After blending, the wine undergoes the traditional second fermentation in bottle before resting 3 years or so "on the lees" for toasty complexity and richness. After "disgorgement" - when the yeast is removed - it's finished at a "Brut" wine with just enough "dosage" - added sugar - to round things off without any perceptible sweetness.
Small, persistent, bubbles lift aromas of brioche, toasted nuts, apple and stone fruit from the glass. Then, round and generous on the palate with nice creaminess and plenty of apple, pear, hazelnut and toast flavors that flow on nicely through the fine finish. As always, about as fine value as Champagne has to offer.
