Saint-Chinian is a fascinating slice of the Languedoc, perched at the southern end of the Massif Central overlooking the plains sloping down to the sea. The loose limestone/schist soils tend to give a mineral spine to the sun-splashed fruit ripeness. And it's remote - visitors are more often wild boars than humans.
Carignan was the main grape historically and makes up 50% of this all tank wine with Grenache and Syrah adding layers and fruit. You'll taste Carignan's signature blueberry and Grenache's red cherry/berry character, but mainly notice the schist minerality and layers of garrigue (thyme, rosemary, lavender and black olives). This is sneaky firm and will shine with stews and roasts but no problem just drinking the stuff.
For You If: You like the flavors of ripe fruit without any hints of jam or candy; you enjoy "mineral" reds - there's plenty of that here!
Not For You If: You're after something that feels dense or fat - this drinks bigger than the 13.5% alcohol, but stays poised and open vs heavy or thick.
