South of Fronsac and east of St Emilion, Castillon is a value-hunters paradise, a slice of Bordeaux where prices still lag quality nicely. Like here is a Cabernet Sauvignon-heavy (35%) Right Bank blend from 40 year-old vines and with 12 months in oak. As Jeb Dunnuck writes in the 90 point praise, “The 2019 Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux Vieilles Vignes has a terrific nose of classic limestone-influenced red and black fruits as well as leather, truffly earth, and tobacco notes. This medium-bodied, round, balanced Castillon has ripe tannins, good mid-palate depth, and a solid finish.” Burger Bordeaux par excellence – better still if the burgers are lamb!
For You If: You enjoy expensive-tasting Bordeaux that isn’t expensive at all; you’re after the combination of rich fruit and earthy complexity you really only get in Bordeaux.
Not For You If: You’re after a lot of new oak flavor – all used casks here – or super-firm tannin – this has grip but not astringency.
