Corbieres is one of France’s most outstanding value wine regions, and the Castelmaure co-op pumps out more extreme value still. “Col des Vents” means "Windy Mountain Pass,” reflecting the hilly terrain here in France’s deep south and cooling winds that balance more or less non-stop sunshine. This is 50% Carignan, 30% Grenache, 15% Syrah and 5% Cinsault done in steel, and it tastes like…well, the Languedoc. The ripe berry, cherry and raspberry fruit speaks to the sunshine, the black pepper and wild herb to the stony landscape, and the balancing freshness to the Mediterranean Sea breezes. A all-purpose red and especially good with lamb burgers and roast chicken rubbed with rosemary.
For You If: You’re looking for a hearty, mouthfilling, red that’s big enough to feel substantial but not at all heavy or sweet-feeling.
Not For You If: You’re after the flavor of oak – all steel here – or a lot of grip – this is pretty smooth and easy.
