The d’Angelo family specialize in site-specific and truly varietal expressions of southern Italy’s best red grape, Aglianico, but with more freshness, suppleness and immediate appeal than you’d find in Taurasi in Campania. This is their “regional’ expression of hand-harvested, nicely ripe, Aglianico aged only in large casks.
Vinous describes is well in the cheerful 90 point review, “Blossoms in the glass with a pretty bouquet of dried violets, crushed blackberries and mandarin zest. It’s round, vibrant and soft-textured, with tart black fruits and savory herbal tones that embellish the close. This tapers off long, perfumed and gently grippy, leaving a pleasantly tart resonance to linger. This is just pure, no-frills Aglianico. It's a total pleasure to drink.”
For You If: You’re in the mood for a robust red to pair with earthy dishes – lentils, lamb, mushroom ragu – that has enough grip to hold up but not so much that it gets in the way of easy enjoyment.
Not For You If: You’re looking for the fine tannins and red berry/rose petal perfume of Nebbiolo – this is darker, duskier and more definitely of the south!
