Lower ABV Daniel Callan’s mission is to highlight the terroir of the Central Coast through the lens of old-vine field blends, like this wild combination of Valdiguié, Cinsault, Négrette, Zinfandel and Cabernet Pfeffer from the Shell Creek, Glenrose, Siletto and Homestead Hill Vineyards and clocks in under 13%, all from vines grown from cuttings taken from pre-Prohibition vineyards. Something like what you’d have found in a wine called “California Burgundy” in the late 1800s/early 20th century all at a juicy 12.6% alcohol.
This is another fine release; as Wine Advocate says in the 94 point rave, "My immediate thought after first running through the 2023 Native Wine of California was, "a bright Syrah dressed like a clean Gamay with a Pinot Noir soul." While it exudes a deeper and darker expression than the 2022 vintage, it retains the characteristic pure, lifted energy that perennially defines the bouquet, accented by warming, dusty spice tones and crushed stone accents that gain volume in the glass. The palate is slender and silky yet sits lower in the mouth with a delicious, weightless density before transitioning into a long, chalky and more fleshed-out finish than the comparatively high-toned, linear 2022 I revisited alongside it. This is unquestionably the most complete rendition of the wine I have tasted to date, and it thankfully comes along with the largest production thus far, at 390 cases."
