You probably can't find Carmignano on a map of Tuscany (hint: to the left and above Florence), but you might start looking for it once you taste this seriously fun 80% Sangiovse and 20% Cabernet Franc blend. Cab has been grown here since the Medici times (a wedding gift to Catherine de Medici when she married Henry II of France) and gives a bit of spice and backbone to the region's softer Sangiovese. Vinous describes this well in the 91 point write-up: "Opens with a darkly alluring blend of dried flowers and citrus-tinged wild berries. Silky-smooth, it washes across the palate with a fresh mélange of herbaceous red and blue berries guided by vibrant acidity. This leaves a staining of blackberry and hints of orange, finishing fresh with unexpected length. The Pietranera is the real value score of the Piaggia portfolio."
For You If: You're in the mood for Italian wine fruit and zest in a more silky, smoother, profile; you're after an elevated pizza wine - especially with some speck or sausage in play; you want to drink the Italian equivalent of a really good French bistro red.
