Like so many dedicated producers, Mas Bertran is a Cava maker who no longer uses the Cava label in protest for the DO's low quality standards. Cava or not, this wine is terrific. Roughly equal parts Xarel lo and Macabeo with around 10% Parellada, it gets 24 months on the lees and then longer post-disgorgement to develop complexity. Super fine (if energetic) bubbles life the dark apple and spiced pear fruit and deep flavors of brioche, hazelnut and smoke. Finishes long, rich and dry with pear tart and smoky flavors lingering. Excellent.
