Organic/Bio A Rioja classic from the first estate to ever bottle Rioja wine in 1862. And not much has changed in this, their flagship red, since then. It’s mostly Tempranillo from Rioja Alavesa, all organically grown and given a splash of Graciano for freshness. It spends two years or so in traditional American oak casks, adding spice and herbal complexity and what Wine Enthusiast calls “satiny tannins” and a “smooth finish…noted for a light burst of mint.”
As JamesSuckling.com says in their 94 point rave, “Refined nose with peppery and earthy undertones to the savory berry fruit, subtle vanilla and orange. Minerals as well. This is firm and quite long on the palate, with medium body and a traditional, nicely rustic twist at the end. Really poised and persistent, showing precision and finesse. One of the best Reserva expressions lately from Marques de Riscal? A joy to drink now, but will hold well over the next 10 years.”
For You If: You enjoy classic Rioja’s blue and black fruit with a kiss of vanilla wrapped in savory herb, smoke and spiced complexity; you’re looking for a wine that is both smooth and satiny and able too complement robust stews and holiday roasts.
Not For You If: You’re after something fruity – the blue/black berry fruit here is delicious, but the overall effect is more savory and spicing than fruity; you really don’t enjoy the flavors of long oak aging – that’s integral to this style of Rioja.
