Lower ABV Txakolina was the drink of choice a few years ago in the cool kids’ bars of NYC. Hopefully that fad is over so there will be more for us! From the Basque Country of northern Spain, it’s 100% Ondaravi Zuri bottled young and gently with just a touch of residual CO2 from fermentation. Bone dry, the crunchy passion fruit, lime and tart lemon fruit and salty seashell minerality make your mouth water and get you scanning the horizon for a pintxos (Basque for tapas) to nibble on with the wine. It’s classically drunk from a short tumbler while standing at a tall table outside a pintxo bar and watching the world go by and waiting for your next round of nibbles. You can use a wine glass if you like.
For You If: You’ve been to San Sabastien and want to relive your trip by sipping on the same wine you drank at pretty much every café you stopped at; you like dry, tart, salty, whites like Muscadet, Abymes, or really good Vinho Verde.
Not For You If: You’re after lots of sweet fruit, big body, or something “smooth” – this is pleasingly sharp and salty and very dry.
