As Vinous explains, “In 2009, Kevin Judd left LVMH-owned Cloudy Bay after 25 years to set up his own label, Greywacke, which is now one of Marlborough’s most respected producers, particularly in the white wine department. Unsurprising, given Judd’s background, Sauvignon Blanc is the main event.” His 2024 is very much a “main event” wine, delivering all the citrusy refreshment you love in New Zealand Sauvignon with an extra dose of body, richness and intensity.
The Wine Spectator 93 point rating gives you an idea of the quality. And I think the folks at JancisRobinson.com describe even better in their 17 of 20 points review: “Vibrant but not overly pungent grassy and peapod aromas, with grapefruit and grapefruit-pith zestiness. All those flavours on the palate and an unexpected spiciness that prickles on your tongue. Pure, taut, fresh and lively but with more texture and depth – and length – than many a New Zealand Sauvignon. This has real presence and complexity, the lees adding a chewy richness on the long finish.”
For You If: You love Marborough Sauvignon Blanc – this is a classic; you enjoy New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc but sometimes find it a bit too austere or grassy – this has a bit more texture and richness than most and dials back the fresh mown lawn to pleasing levels.
Not For You If: You just can’t stand ANY fresh herb/grass notes; you want a soft and fruity wine – this has lovely energy and cut.
