Organic/Bio The south-facing Mont George hill was always considered the best in Saint Porcain but was abandoned in the 1950s as the old vines failed and sales were too low to justify replanting. In 2020 a trio of the finest growers in the region, including Denis Grosbot-Barbara, replanted this legendary site to 50% Pinot Noir and 50% Gamay, with the Gamay from cuttings of dozens of clones found in the region. This is the first release, made by the three winemakers together in the Grosbot-Barbara cellars.
History aside, it's remarkable wine, starting with harnesing the ripening power of this steep, sunmy, hill to bring in Loire Valley red wine at a full and fleshy 14.5%! For all that richness, the wine feels very viviid and pure with layers of ripe black cherry, raspberry, damson plum, sappy herb and earth aromas and flavors. The wine really spreads out on your mid-palate before coming back into tight focus with a squirt of tart cherry juice over the fine tannins. A great match for duck, grilled sausages, lentils, dark-fleshed fish or pretty much anything else you're cooking up. And a fascinating start to what will be a years-long journey of bringing this great vineyard back to fame.
For You If: You like powerful Cru Beaujolais like Morgon or Moulin-a-Vent in warm vintages and think that with a dash of Pinot Noir richness sounds good; you're looking to taste the first ever vintage of something special and, perhaps, follow it for years.
