Lower ABV The “Vernaccia” in the winery name is a reference to the traditional wine of this part of Sardinia – a lightly fortified, Sherry-like, wine named for Sardinia’s version of Vernaccia. A small group of growers founded this co-op to make this style of Vernaccia in 1953 and then expanded to working with the island’s other local grapes. We’ve never tried their Vernaccia, but their Vermentino is terrific!
Grown all around the Mediterranean Sea, think of Vermentino as a rounder, more friendly, take on Sauvignon Blanc but with orange and green citrus fruit flavors in place of Sauvignon’s grapefruit. This one’s delicious, capturing the grape’s generous orange, tangerine and ripe apricot fruit with a squeeze of fresh lime juice for freshness. It’s grown just off Sardinia’s western coast, and delivers a touch of salty seaside character on the broad, dry, finish with just a touch of tangerine pith bite at the very end. A terrific solo sipper on a warm afternoon or evening and perhaps better still with super-fresh fish and shellfish.
For You If: You’re a Sauvignon Blanc fan looking for a variation on the theme OR you like juicy/salty whites and want to avoid grapefruit and grass; you’re after a white you can serve as the evening begins and then take to table with salads and seafood – we keep thinking of a crudo with jalapeno and Mandarin orange…
Not For You If: You’re after something oaky and rich – this is zesty, fresh, and done all in steel; you want a white without much fruit and with lots of acidic bite – this is nicely fruited and has just enough grip at the end to stay fresh.
