Cuatro Rayas was founded in 1935 to do one thing - make terrific Verdejo. Back in the beginning, that meant a wine that would seem really...let's say "exotic"...to us, a white wine aged in glass demijohns in the hot Spanish sun until it turned nutty and brown. But when stainless steel tanks and temperature control arrived in the region in the 1980s, the members of this 400-family cooperative winery quickly became the leading producer of what Spaniards think of when they say "vino blanco" - crisp, clean, dry and refreshing Rueda Verdejo.
This is the winery's entry-level bottling and it's fantastic. Big, bold aromas of sliced Valencia oranges, pink grapefruit and sliced Honeydew melon are followed by equally big flavors with an extra squirt of lime. A touch of orange peel and pith bite adds interest to the super crisp, fresh and refreshingly dry finish. The combination of loads of ripe fruit in the middle and a nice bite of dry pithiness at the end is pretty compelling, pulling you back for sip after sip. Delicious summer white; fantastic all-year value.
For You If: You enjoy Sauvignon Blanc’s freshness with fruit that skews more orange than grapefruit and with a nice dose of dusty minerality.
Not For You If: You don’t want citrus – it’s more orange than grapefruit here, but makes up this satiny wine’s core.
