Arneis is often cited as Piedmont’s own native white grape and you’ll see good examples from most major Barolo and Barbaresco producers. But the grapes thrives not there, but in Roero where lighter soils allow it to ripen fully while staying refreshingly bright. Roero masters Angelo Nero make a fine example, full of ripe peach and orchard fruit, lightly floral, a bit creamy in feel with a juicy squeeze of lemon at the end to make your mouth water and keep you coming back for more. Delicious.
For You If: You’re looking for Italian white freshness with plenty of aroma and flavor; you enjoy the complexity and floral/fruit pairing of Viognier but want that in a fresher, more crisp, way with a nicely dry finish.
Not For You If: You’re looking for crisp, neutral, white wine – this has loads of aroma and flavor and a nicely round/creaming middle.
