Organic/Bio Lower ABV This wine is ridiculously good and if you let the low price convince you otherwise…well, just don’t. It’s pretty wild in aroma, flavor and feel, with bold Key lime and stone fruit at the core and layers of thyme, rosemary and basil herb and a pop of sea salt on the dry, but still generous and easy, finish. The poise, texture and length on the palate all belong to a wine in the $20 price range. So when you serve it for cocktails or with fresh seafood or creamy cheeses, just smile as everyone congratulates you for breaking out “the good stuff.”
It's from Sicily’s western coast, once famed for Marsala but now evolving into a very fine source of seafood-friendly whites. Both Grecanico (60%) and Catarratto (40%) have long histories in Sicily, although Grecanico is the same grape as Soave’s Garganega and it’s not clear which way the migration worked. But both it and Sicilian native Catarratto love volcanic soils, hot days and sea-breeze-cooled nights. And being picked fresh and brought up in cool steel. Like here.
The winery is young, founded in 2003 by long-time vineyard farmers the Paladino and Spanò families. With Marsala’s fall from fame and customer favor, they decided to pivot from selling to that trade and making their own wines from their own grapes. Today they make a lot of wine and lots of different wines from their 50HA of holdings, all grown organically and all priced at excellent value for the quality. But none better than this, one of the finest white wine values we’ve seen in years.
For You If: You enjoy Albarino, Italy’s coastal whites, Pinot Grigio or pretty much any no-oak whites with crisp, clean, fruit, not too much citrus, and a dry and salty finish.
