D’Angelo was one of the first wineries in Vulture to experiment with aging Aglianico in small French oak, and as this shows, that extra expense creates something very special indeed! All of Aglianico’s earthy power with a touch of sweet spice and just a bit of roundness to the texture.
Vinous describes it well in the 92 point review, “Dusty violet florals, crushed stones, nuances of cigar ash and blackcurrants form a hauntingly dark bouquet as the 2022 Rosso Canneto emerges from the glass. Elegant and silken in feel, it floods the palate with ripe black fruits yet quickly firms up as saline minerals and a tinge of sour citrus add contrast toward the close. Fine-grained tannins lend youthful poise as the 2022 tapers off structured and incredibly long, leaving a saturation of tart blackberry to fade. The Canneto is a varietal Aglianico raised in French barriques. Integration here is spot-on.”
For You If: You’re looking for Aglianico earthy/herbal complexity with a bit more refinement and polish to the tannins and just a touch of sweet oak spice; you’re in the mood for a bold Italian red to enjoy with grilled steak.
Not For You If: You’re after Aglianico’s wilder, earthier, grippier style – this has a bit of polish and restraint although remains distinctly Vulture!
