Forget for a moment it’s from Croatia: this is a terrific all-season white that’s bursting with green apple and citrus fruit in a crisp, mouthwatering, package that really glides across your palate and leaves you thinking, “More, please!” It’s 100% Welschriesling, which has nothing to do with Riesling and is probably native to Croatia where it’s called Grasevina. There’s enough fruit – apple, lemon, a hint of Anjou pear – and body here that it’s plenty substantial and a step up from “light.” It’s bursting with green apple freshness and salty minerality, so the flavors lift up nicely and your mouth waters happily on the zesty, dry, finish.
But what we like most about it is the texture, a silky/steely feel to the wine that lets it move across your palate with delight and without effort. It moves with such enjoyable ease that you just might need to pay attention to how fast the sips keep coming. It’s a terrific seafood companion and warm weather refresher and anyone who likes Albarino or Italian whites like Verdicchio or Gavi is going to love this.
For You If: You enjoy Italian whites like Verdicchio or Gavi that serve up crisp fruit and a silky/steely texture and crisp, dry, finish; you're after a great match for garlicy shrimp pasta.
Not For You If: You’re after the petrol, peach and/or minerality of “real” Riesling or the richness and roundness of some Pinot Grigio – this is zippy, crisp, and a joy to drink.
