Carmignano, just outside Florence, is the forgotten region of Tuscany, but when the Medici’s ruled the region, it was their home vineyard. As Vinous says, “The Piaggia winery remains, without a doubt, the shining beacon of light in the Carmignano territory. While the region grows and producers continue to improve their practices (and, ultimately, their wines), Piaggia has been at the top of its game for longer than I can recount. If I were forced to pick one producer in Carmignano to follow, it would be Piaggia.”
The hallmark of Tuscany’s Carmignano region is Cabernet and Merlot, both brought to Italy by Catherine di Medici in the 1700s. Here those blending partners join 70% Tuscan Sangiovese to create a wine of excellent power and grace. As Vinous says in the 94 point review, “Dusty, floral and perfumed, the 2022 Carmignano Il Sasso lifts from the glass with a lovely blend of rose petals, incense, lavender pastille and dried currants. The longer it sits in the glass, the more aromatic complexity it gains. It's silky smooth and elegant in style with a slight peppery tinge that adds depth as ripe wild berry fruits slowly saturate throughout. This finishes with tremendous depth and length, punching well above its class as fine-grained tannins add a lovely framework and hints of licorice resonate.”
For You If: You're you'd like to try the original "super-Tuscan" red based on both local and French grapes; you're looking for a great wine to pair with beef, lamb or sausages whether or not the preparation is Italian.
Not For You If: You'd like to drink what we think of as "traditional" Tuscan reds - this is the traditional wine of this part of Tuscany, but the Bordeaux varietals are more prominent than you'd find in, say, Chianti.
