Organic/Bio Lower ABV The benchmark producer of Abruzzo is run by founder Emidio Pepe’s mid-30s granddaughter, Chiara De Iulis Pepe, today with just as much success as ever. Their Trebbiano d’Abruzzo is hands down the best white of the region and miles away from what you’d expect from the more common Trebbiano Toscana. The crunchy pear, apricot and lemon fruit are lovely, but this is not about the fruit. Instead the joy is a dense, deep, texture that caresses your palate while staying light and savory notes of seaside herbs, ginger, wild flowers and more. The kind of wine you cant stop drinking or thinking about with each sip unveiling something a little new. Serve it with simple fish or poultry dishes with savory herbs so the wine can really stand out now – 2032 or so.
The Vinous 95 point review captures it nicely: "The most inviting mix of lemon oils, musky pear and peach, raw almond, ginger, iodine and yellow flowers wafts up from the 2019 Trebbiano d’Abruzzo Vecchie Vigne. It’s pliant, yet almost buoyant, seeming to hover across the palate with notes of apricot and salty mineral tones that are nicely offset by a pretty inner sweetness. The 2019 becomes perfumed throughout the saline-tinged finale, as inner florals slowly taper off. There’s a density and balance here that should unfold beautifully over the course of the next decade."
For You If: You’re after a glorious experience and a wine that commands your attention with every sip and savor; you enjoy wines that aren’t at all fruity but also aren’t at all hard to enjoy – this isn’t weird or strange, just beautifully unique.
Not For You If: You’re looking for a crowd-pleaser or casual sipper – this isn’t exactly demanding, but it will appeal most to drinkers looking to pay attention to what’s in their glass and mouth.
