Along with JJ Prum and Markus Molitor, Hermann is one of the finest wineries of Germany’s Mosel Valley. All of the family’s vines are ungrafted and grow on super-steep, slate and rock-covered, slopes looking down on the river. Erdener Treppchen is an especially steep hillside, so much so that centuries ago vine owners cut stairs into the rock so that vineyard workers could get up and down the hill. The vineyard name refers to the nearby village of Erden and this “Treppchen,” or “little staircase.”
The high-acid 2008s were petty austere in their youth but, as Jancis Robinson has written, “took longer to peak, but were absolutely outstanding once they found their balance.” Like here! This is a deliciously mature Riesling. The wine pours with a deep, burnished, gold color with a lovely, shiny, healthy, shine. The aromas are generous and complex, with notes of toffee, wet stones, toasted nuts, honey and a hint of something floral – verbena, maybe? That healthy shine you saw in the glass is repeated on the palate with a sense of steeliness and clarity to the very deep, complex, flavors of orange marmalade, honeycomb and lemon peel. Flavors of orange marmalade on fresh toasted bread just keep sailing on through a long finish with the minerality and cut to keep things fresh and pull you back for more. Ready now and best over the next 4-5 years.
For You If: You’re looking for Riesling or any dessert wine that’s not going to leave you thinking, “That was good, but it really needs a few more years age;” you’re after a terrific match for a dessert with oranges or apricots – this will sing!
Not For You If: You want the exotic notes botrytis gives dessert wines – this is from a year when botrytis was scarce; you are looking for dry Riesling – this is the opposite of that!
