If ever there was a perfect marriage between a winemaker’s desire and what a site has to give, it happens here between Costanzo and Caldwell Vyd. It’s a stunning site, perched on the rim of Coombsville looking north to the warmth while being cooled from San Pablo Bay to the south. Masimo gets he fruit from the early-1980s Block 11, gives it 20 days on the skings and ages it in 40% new French oak (low toast, very high quality).
As Vinous says in the 94 point review, it’s a wine that “marries power with elegance” to create what Suckling calls in the 96 point praise “A classic Coombsville Cabernet.” Advocate’s 96 point rave captures it perfectly: “Cool, restrained scents include hints of pencil shavings, violets, cassis, black cherries and blueberries—a superbly nuanced and complex nose. In the mouth, the wine is medium to full-bodied and framed by ripe tannins that feel somewhere between velvet and silk on the lingering finish.” Delicious now with a decant and best from 2027 forward 20 years.
For You If: You’re in the mood for beautiful Napa Cab that will flower with a little patience – either in decanter or in cellar – with an absolutely captivating texture.
Not For You If: You’re after Howell Mountain-style power and grip or something thick and broad – this has PLENTY of substance but is more restrained and pure.
